The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has penalized reigning Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen following a contentious collision with Mercedes driver George Russell during the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix. The incident, which occurred on lap 64 at Turn 5, led to a 10-second time penalty and the addition of three penalty points to Verstappen’s Super Licence, bringing his total to 11—just one point shy of an automatic one-race ban .
During the race, Verstappen was instructed by his Red Bull team to allow Russell to pass after an earlier off-track excursion. However, moments after complying, Verstappen made contact with Russell’s car, an action that many, including 2016 World Champion Nico Rosberg, interpreted as deliberate. Rosberg criticized the move, suggesting it warranted a black flag and immediate disqualification .
Verstappen addressed the incident on social media, stating that his frustration led to a move that was “not right and shouldn’t have happened,” though he stopped short of issuing a direct apology .
With the Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix approaching, Verstappen must avoid accruing any additional penalty points to prevent a suspension. His current points will not decrease until June 30, making the upcoming races critical for his championship campaign .
The FIA’s decision has sparked debate within the F1 community, with some advocating for stricter penalties to uphold sportsmanship and safety standards. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Verstappen’s conduct on the track.
