FIA Orders Inspection of Piastri and Norris’s Cars After Verstappen Penalty Cla…. read more

JEDDAH, April 20, 2025 — The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) ordered a full post-race inspection of both McLaren Formula 1 cars after the team delivered a stellar performance at the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Oscar Piastri claimed his third win of the season, while teammate Lando Norris finished just outside the podium in P4, further cementing McLaren’s growing threat to Red Bull’s dominance.

The FIA’s decision to scrutinize the McLaren MCL38s followed standard procedure, targeting key components including the gearbox, floor, and aerodynamic elements. The governing body confirmed that both Piastri’s and Norris’s cars complied fully with the 2024 Formula 1 Technical Regulations. This clearance solidified McLaren’s double-points result as legal and unchallenged.

Piastri’s win in Jeddah was significant—not only did it showcase McLaren’s rising competitiveness, but it also catapulted the young Australian to the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings with 99 points. His cool-headed driving and strategic tire management allowed him to withstand pressure from Ferrari and capitalize on a five-second penalty handed to Max Verstappen for gaining an advantage off-track.

“I’m proud of what we achieved today,” Piastri said post-race. “The car felt great, and the team gave me everything I needed to get the job done.”

Norris, who had a solid qualifying session and ran strongly in the top five throughout the race, echoed the positive sentiment. “It’s great to see both cars performing so well. We’re in a good place, and Oscar did an amazing job,” he said. Though narrowly missing out on a podium, Norris remains in close contention in the championship race.

The inspection came amid rising scrutiny across the paddock as top teams push the limits of performance and regulation. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner had lodged a protest against Verstappen’s penalty, arguing the Dutch driver was unfairly treated. However, the FIA upheld the decision, which helped clear the path for Piastri’s victory.

McLaren’s recent upgrades, particularly to their floor and rear suspension setup, appear to be paying dividends as the team closes the gap to Red Bull and Ferrari. With both drivers consistently delivering strong results and no regulatory violations found in their cars, McLaren seems poised to be a serious title contender in 2025.

As the Formula 1 calendar moves on to the next round, all eyes will remain on the orange team to see if they can maintain their momentum in this increasingly competitive season.
