Red Bull Seeks FIA Super Licence Exemption for Arvid Lindblad

Red Bull Racing has formally requested an exemption from the FIA to allow its 17-year-old junior driver, Arvid Lindblad, to obtain a Formula 1 Super Licence ahead of his 18th birthday in August 2025. This move aims to enable Lindblad to participate in F1 sessions, including free practice, during the current season.

Lindblad, a British-Swedish talent, has already met the 40-point threshold required for a Super Licence, thanks to his impressive performances in junior categories. Notably, he secured the Formula Regional Oceania Championship title earlier this year, adding 18 points to his tally. His fourth-place finish in the 2024 FIA Formula 3 Championship and strong results in various Formula 4 series have further bolstered his credentials.

Despite meeting the points requirement, Lindblad’s age presents a hurdle. The FIA’s regulations stipulate a minimum age of 18 for Super Licence eligibility. However, a provision introduced in 2023 allows for exceptions in “exceptional circumstances,” permitting drivers aged 17 to obtain a Super Licence if they have demonstrated “outstanding ability and maturity” in single-seater competitions.

Red Bull’s advisor, Helmut Marko, has expressed confidence in Lindblad’s capabilities, stating, “We see no reason why the same shouldn’t be true for Lindblad,” referencing the FIA’s previous exemption granted to Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Red Bull’s application underscores its commitment to nurturing young talent and preparing Lindblad for a potential future in Formula 1. The team aims to integrate him into F1 activities, providing valuable experience and development opportunities ahead of a possible race seat in the coming seasons.

The FIA’s decision on the exemption request will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for future young drivers aspiring to enter Formula 1 before reaching the age of 18.
