Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has provided an update on his health after feeling unwell following a strong performance at the Miami Grand Prix. Despite battling physical discomfort during the final stages of the race, Russell managed to secure a third-place finish—his fourth podium of the 2025 season.
Although Russell delivered a solid race and finished ahead of reigning world champion Max Verstappen, he skipped the post-race FIA press conference due to illness. Team Mercedes later confirmed that his absence was due to medical reasons.
Speaking with Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes shortly after the race, the 27-year-old Briton revealed he had been struggling with stomach cramps during the final 10 laps. “I felt like I did a really strong race today. I’m feeling really sick now actually,” Russell admitted. “The last 10 laps of the race I got a really bad stomach cramp and now I’m struggling to stand because my stomach is a bit upset, but I’m happy with P3.”
Russell’s performance in Miami brings him closer in the drivers’ championship standings, as he now trails Verstappen by just six points. Verstappen failed to score in the sprint race and was outperformed by both McLaren drivers during the main Grand Prix.
Only Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri attended the post-race press conference, with Norris celebrating his fourth race victory of the season. Russell, meanwhile, will take the next two weeks to rest and recover before Formula 1 moves to Imola for the seventh round of the championship.
Reflecting on the weekend, Russell remained positive about his overall results despite his struggles. “I’m really pleased with how the result ended up. Obviously, I’ve been really struggling this weekend, but I always try and remind myself—even after a good qualifying, it doesn’t mean anything, and after a bad qualifying it also means nothing,” he said.
With his eyes now on the upcoming race in Italy, Russell will be looking to continue his impressive form and close the gap on the dominant McLaren duo.
