Hamilton wants to win his eighth title with Ferrari, insists Ferrari President Elkann
Ferrari President John Elkann recently shared insights into Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected decision to join Ferrari, emphasizing that the British driver is determined to secure his record-breaking eighth Formula 1 title with the iconic Italian team.
The announcement of Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, made in early February, sent shockwaves through the racing world. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, had been expected to continue racing with Mercedes until the end of the 2025 F1 season. However, he chose to exercise an exit clause, allowing him to leave the team where he had achieved six of his seven world titles.
Over the past two years, Hamilton has faced challenges as Mercedes struggled with consistency, despite occasional bursts of speed. Nevertheless, he broke his winless streak just last month by clinching a victory at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone.
NoThis marked his first win since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Statistically, Hamilton is the most successful Formula 1 driver, tied with Michael Schumacher in terms of world titles but surpassing the German legend in race wins, with 105 victories compared to Schumacher’s 91.
Elkann, reflecting on Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari, emphasized that the Briton’s primary motivation is to secure his eighth F1 title, a feat that would make him the most successful driver in the sport’s history.
Elkann stated that Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is not about winding down his career, but rather about continuing to compete at the highest level. According to Elkann, Hamilton’s presence in the team will significantly strengthen Ferrari’s chances of returning to the pinnacle of Formula 1.
In a recent interview with Corriere dello Sport, Elkann expressed confidence in Hamilton’s abilities and motivation. He remarked, “Some things happen very quickly. This was the moment he and Ferrari met.
He wants to win the eighth title, Ferrari wants to win, and with Lewis, he is stronger. He doesn’t come to Ferrari to enjoy retirement, and it’s important to have motivated people around who want to win.”
Elkann dismissed concerns about Hamilton’s age, as the Briton will turn 40 next January. Instead, he highlighted the value of Hamilton’s experience, particularly in the current highly competitive environment of Formula 1. He pointed out that the top teams—Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes—are now very closely matched, making experience and consistency more crucial than ever. Elkann also referenced Fernando Alonso, another veteran driver, as an example of how experience contributes to consistent performance.
Elkann’s comments suggest that Ferrari views Hamilton as a key component in their quest to reclaim dominance in Formula 1. With the competition among the top teams being so intense, Elkann believes that Hamilton’s experience and determination will be critical in helping Ferrari achieve its goals.
In sum, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is driven by a shared ambition: to win the elusive eighth title, solidifying both his and Ferrari’s legacy in the sport.
