BREAKING:Helmut Marko Admits Red Bull’s Mistake in 2025 D…read more
Helmut Marko, the head of Red Bull Racing, has publicly acknowledged that the team made a significant error in its driver selection for the 2025 Formula 1 season. The decision to promote Liam Lawson to replace Sergio Perez after a lackluster 2024 season did not go as planned. Lawson, who had hoped to make an impact in the team, struggled to score points in his first two races. As a result, he has been sent back to Red Bull’s sister team, Racing Bulls, while Yuki Tsunoda, who had been a strong candidate for Perez’s seat, will replace him at Red Bull for the remainder of the season.
Marko revealed that Red Bull chose Lawson over Tsunoda due to the Japanese driver’s inconsistency. However, Lawson’s inability to perform under pressure led to his swift downfall. “Yuki was too inconsistent, which is why we unanimously chose Lawson,” Marko explained. “But under the increased pressure, he couldn’t deliver from day one. He entered a downward spiral, and it became difficult for him to recover. In that sense, it was a mistake.”
In addition, Marko mentioned that Lawson’s performance in the Australian Grand Prix was affected by a turbo issue in free practice, causing him to lose crucial track time and further hinder his performance. “What he has delivered so far is not enough,” Marko admitted. “We need a strong second driver, especially for strategy purposes.”
The initial hope was that Lawson’s arrival would help Red Bull close the gap to their rivals and strengthen their bid for the 2025 constructors’ title. However, after just two races, the team now finds itself trailing defending champions McLaren by 42 points, putting their chances of reclaiming the title in serious jeopardy.
Looking ahead, Tsunoda will be tasked with trying to help Red Bull recover lost ground, starting with the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix, which will be his home race. Meanwhile, Lawson, now back with Racing Bulls, will partner rookie Isack Hadjar and look to regain his momentum and F1 career development.
