Helmut Marko Reveals Yuki Tsunoda Was a “Red Flag” for Adrian Newey After…read more.
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has revealed that Yuki Tsunoda became a “red flag” for legendary engineer Adrian Newey following the 2022 British Grand Prix. The incident that raised concerns occurred when Tsunoda collided with his then-AlphaTauri teammate Pierre Gasly, causing both cars to go off the track. The crash scattered debris, which ended up damaging Max Verstappen’s Red Bull, impacting his race performance.
Tsunoda, known for his aggressive driving style, was already under scrutiny for his consistency and racecraft. However, this particular incident reportedly left a lasting impression on Newey, one of the most respected minds in Formula 1 car design. Marko suggested that Newey, who plays a crucial role in Red Bull’s engineering decisions, saw Tsunoda as a potential liability rather than a future candidate for a top team seat.
Since then, Tsunoda has worked on refining his approach, showing steady improvement in recent seasons. Currently driving for RB (formerly AlphaTauri), he has delivered stronger performances and is being considered for a potential promotion within the Red Bull setup. However, past mistakes, such as the Silverstone collision, continue to influence perceptions of his readiness for a seat alongside Verstappen.
With the 2025 driver market shaping up, Tsunoda’s future remains uncertain. If he can prove his maturity and consistency, he may still have a chance to convince Red Bull’s decision-makers, including Newey, that he deserves an opportunity at the top level.
