In a stunning revelation, seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has declared Sebastian Vettel as “the best World Champion that I know.” The British racing icon, who has battled some of the greatest drivers in the sport, singled out his former rival for a quality that sets him apart from the rest.

Hamilton and Vettel shared a fierce rivalry on the track, with the German dominating Formula 1 from 2010 to 2013 with Red Bull before Hamilton’s resurgence with Mercedes in 2014. Their battles reached new heights when Vettel moved to Ferrari, mounting serious title challenges in 2017 and 2018. However, despite their intense competition, Hamilton holds Vettel in the highest regard—not just for his driving skills, but for something far more significant.

Speaking at a recent Petronas event ahead of his highly anticipated move to Ferrari in 2025, Hamilton explained why Vettel stands out among F1’s legendary champions. “He is the best world champion that I know because he’s far more than just a driver,” Hamilton said. “He’s someone with real passion, he’s empathetic, and he cares for people.”

While many F1 stars have earned fame for their on-track heroics, Hamilton believes Vettel is unique in using his platform for a greater purpose. “He actually is the only other one that’s tried to utilize his platform for good,” Hamilton stated, highlighting Vettel’s advocacy for environmental and social causes in the latter years of his career.

Vettel’s activism became a defining aspect of his time in Formula 1. Whether speaking out on climate change, LGBTQ+ rights, or other social issues, he became one of the most vocal figures in the paddock—something Hamilton deeply admires. “I’ve met so many celebrities and so many people,” Hamilton continued. “There’s a lot of people that don’t take time for others. And I think, for me, that… It doesn’t matter how good he drives, because he is so quick anyway. We had great races together, but I think, for me, we had the best races together.”

Vettel retired from F1 at the end of 2022 after two seasons with Aston Martin, closing the curtain on an illustrious career that saw him claim four World Championships. Meanwhile, Hamilton, in a shocking twist, has triggered a release clause in his Mercedes contract to join Ferrari for the 2025 season. The move sees him follow in Vettel’s footsteps, as he partners Charles Leclerc at the Scuderia.

Hamilton’s words solidify Vettel’s legacy not just as an incredible driver but as a true ambassador for change. In a sport where speed and success often define a champion, Hamilton’s praise offers a reminder that greatness is about more than just victories—it’s about the impact left behind. And in Hamilton’s eyes, Vettel’s influence on the sport and the world beyond it is unmatched.
