Max Verstappen One Penalty Point Short of Race Suspension
Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 World Champion, is on the brink of a race suspension following a contentious collision with George Russell during the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix. The incident, which occurred on Lap 63 at Turn 5, saw Verstappen, after being instructed by his team to allow Russell to pass, veer into the Mercedes driver’s car. Onboard footage confirmed the aggressive maneuver, leading to widespread criticism from commentators and former drivers, including Nico Rosberg, who labeled the action as “extremely unacceptable” and called for Verstappen’s disqualification.
In response, the FIA imposed a 10-second penalty and added three penalty points to Verstappen’s Super Licence, bringing his total to 11—just one point shy of the 12-point threshold that triggers an automatic race ban. This penalty dropped him from fifth to tenth in the race standings.
Verstappen later addressed the incident, admitting that the move was “not right and shouldn’t have happened,” attributing it to frustration over race strategy and emotions.
With the Canadian Grand Prix scheduled for June 15, Verstappen must avoid accruing any additional penalty points to prevent a suspension. His current standing places him at significant risk, as accumulating just one more point before June 30 would result in a race ban.
This situation has intensified scrutiny on Verstappen’s conduct and sportsmanship, raising questions about his maturity and ability to manage pressure. As the championship battle continues, all eyes will be on Montreal to see how Verstappen responds to this mounting pressure.
