Max Verstappen’s Father, Jos, Involved in Rally Crash at Ypres Rally

Former Formula 1 driver Jos Verstappen, father of reigning F1 World Champion Max Verstappen, was involved in a significant crash during the 2024 Ypres Rally in Belgium. The incident occurred on June 23, 2024, as Jos was competing in the Belgian Rally Championship event.

Jos, 52, had a promising start to the rally, securing second place after the third special stage, trailing leader Stéphane Lefebvre by just 3.3 seconds. However, a puncture during the fourth stage dropped him to 15th position. Undeterred, Verstappen pushed hard, recording two fastest stage times and climbing back to eighth place overall. Unfortunately, his rally ended abruptly when he lost control of his car, which veered off the road and collided with a tree, causing significant front-end damage.

Both Jos and his co-driver, Renaud Jamoul, escaped the crash without injuries. The incident occurred during the same weekend that Max Verstappen clinched victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, highlighting a weekend of contrasting fortunes for the Verstappen family.

Jos Verstappen has been actively participating in rally events in recent years, transitioning from his Formula 1 career to rallying with notable success. Despite the setback at Ypres, he remains committed to his rally endeavors.

The Ypres Rally, known for its challenging tarmac stages and unpredictable conditions, has tested many seasoned drivers. Jos’s crash serves as a reminder of the sport’s inherent risks. Fans and the motorsport community have expressed relief over the crew’s safety and anticipate Jos’s return to rallying action in future events.
