BREAKING:Mercedes Boss Plans to End Verstappen Speculation with Russell Contract O…read more
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed that the speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s potential move to the team will come to an end once George Russell signs a new contract with the Silver Arrows.
Russell’s current contract expires at the end of this year, and there has been increasing speculation about his future, especially with recent comments from McLaren boss Zak Brown, who suggested that Verstappen could replace Russell at Mercedes. However, Wolff is keen to put those rumors to rest and has revealed that discussions are already underway to secure Russell for the long term.
When asked if he was planning to extend Russell’s contract, Wolff responded, “Yes, absolutely. It’s almost an open secret that we intend to keep our drivers for the long term. We don’t disclose every conversation we have with them, which is why this speculation continues.”
Wolff added that the speculation about Verstappen would subside once Russell’s new deal is finalized. He also emphasized that any contract discussions are a comprehensive process that benefits both the team and the driver, beyond just securing a seat for the driver.
“Yes, exactly,” Wolff said when asked if the Verstappen rumors would end with Russell’s new contract. “But there is more to a contract than just guaranteeing a driver a seat. There are terms to be discussed for the best interest of both the team and the driver. It’s a structured process.”
Russell, who is currently third in the World Championship standings, has impressed so far this season, finishing on the podium in both races so far, alongside Lando Norris. Wolff praised his performance, stating, “He is a top, top driver, and we’re lucky to have him. We knew when we brought in Kimi Antonelli that George would serve as a solid benchmark for the team.”
The announcement of Russell’s new contract would likely silence any remaining rumors about Verstappen’s future at Mercedes and solidify the team’s driver lineup for the foreseeable future.
