The Four Reasons Bernardo Returned to Celtic
During Paulo Bernardo’s first press conference as a permanent Celtic player, he shared his thoughts about rejoining the team after transferring from Benfica.
How happy are you to have finalized the deal?
I’m thrilled to be back. Last season was incredible, and I’m excited to continue here.
Were you always confident that the transfer would happen?
Yes, I was.
What are your goals for this season?
I aim to win the domestic titles again and have a successful run in Europe. I’m excited for what’s ahead.
From a personal standpoint, what are your aspirations?
I want to improve upon last season. It was a good year, but I know I can do better, and I’m confident this season will be even stronger.
Was it difficult to adjust to a new country and club?
Last year, the transition was smooth. My teammates, the staff, and the club were all very welcoming, so I had no issues.
Are you confident about earning a starting spot in midfield?
I am, but I know I have to work for it. That challenge motivates me, and I’m determined to earn my place.
Do you believe you can achieve that?
I certainly hope so!
What did you consider before committing to a five-year deal?
I always wanted to come back to Celtic, so it was an easy decision. I loved everything about last season, and the club treated me exceptionally well. It’s a pleasure to return.
When you first arrived on loan, did you envision making Celtic your permanent home, or were you focused only on the loan?
I did think about staying permanently, but I knew it was just a loan initially. I took it one step at a time, and I’m really happy it worked out this way.
What made you fall in love with the club and want to stay?
The club and the fans, both at home and away games, made me feel at home. Celtic is a huge club, not just in Scotland but globally. When the opportunity came to stay, I took it.
How do you see the team progressing this season with the manager now more settled?
The potential is limitless. We improved throughout last season, and this year, we’re focused on continuing that progress.
You played in all the Champions League games last season but didn’t start any. Is that something you want to change?
The Champions League is the best competition out there. I started two matches last year, but I aim to be a regular starter.
Was it tough to wait for the deal to be finalized over the summer?
These things can take time, but I stayed patient, and I’m just happy to be back.
Did you have to do anything to push the deal forward?
No, I stayed out of it. I trusted the people involved to do their jobs, and it all worked out.
You made a big impact at the end of last season. Did that make returning even more special?
Definitely. That moment was very special, especially since we had already won the league and the cup. It’s a great memory, and those were my first two career titles.
Have you and the manager identified areas for improvement?
I enjoy working with the manager and the staff. They helped me develop a lot last season, and that support was a key reason for my return.
Does a five-year contract give you peace of mind, both on and off the pitch?
Yes, absolutely. Knowing I’m here long-term makes everything easier off the pitch, which helps me focus and perform better on it.
How does this move affect your international career prospects?
It’s a big step for me, and I’m working hard to seize opportunities with the national team as well.
Do you think success with Celtic and playing in the Champions League will boost your international chances?
Definitely. There’s no doubt about that.
When you came to Celtic last year, was it challenging not knowing your long-term future?
Last year, I brought a lot of clothes and kept them in storage because I wasn’t sure if I’d be back.
This year, it’s easier since I already have my things in Scotland.
