The Buffalo Bills have announced several changes to their coaching staff in preparation for the 2023 season. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has opted to take a one-year break from coaching. During Frazier’s tenure as defensive coordinator, the Bills have achieved multiple seasons where their defense ranked in the top five in the NFL. Since 2017, the Bills have maintained impressive defensive statistics, including allowing an average of 20 points per game (3rd in the NFL over that period), 315 total yards per game (1st), 202 passing yards per game (1st), 107 passing touchdowns (1st), and accumulating 99 interceptions (2nd) and 158 takeaways (2nd). Frazier intends to return for the 2024 season.

In light of Frazier’s departure, the Bills have brought in Al Holcomb and Adam Henry to bolster their coaching staff, while Austin Gund and Kyle Shurmur will transition into new coaching roles. Holcomb joins the team as a senior defensive assistant, having previously served with the Carolina Panthers as the interim defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for two seasons. He also held coaching positions with the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, and New York Giants, reuniting with Bills head coach Sean McDermott, whom he worked alongside during their time in Carolina. Holcomb brings with him experience from winning Super Bowl XLVI with the Giants in the 2011 season.

Henry, the newly appointed wide receivers coach, most recently worked at Indiana University as the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. He has previously held positions with NFL teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, and San Francisco 49ers. Henry also had a successful playing career as a wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints from 1994 to 1996.

Gund, who transitions from offensive quality control coach to offensive assistant/offensive line coach, previously served as a graduate assistant at Wake Forest, primarily working with the offensive line. He played college football as an offensive lineman for the University of Richmond. Meanwhile, Shurmur, who moves from defensive quality control coach to offensive quality control coach, previously served as a backup quarterback for the Washington Football Team and has also played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and Cincinnati Bengals.
