Chris Buescher’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff hopes revived as NASCAR partially overturns a 60-point penalty after RFK Racing’s appeal. Find out what this means for the No. 17 team.

Chris Buescher Gets Playoff Lifeline After NASCAR Partially Reverses Penalty on Appeal
RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher just got a significant lifeline in his pursuit of a 2025 NASCAR Cup Series playoff spot. NASCAR has officially reduced a harsh points penalty levied against Buescher and the No. 17 team following a technical infraction at Kansas Speedway.
Earlier this month, NASCAR docked the team 60 driver and owner points, along with five playoff points, due to rule violations discovered during post-race inspections. These penalties dealt a heavy blow to Buescher’s playoff hopes, dropping him well outside the cut line.
However, RFK Racing immediately contested the ruling, taking their case to the National Motorsports Appeals Panel. On Wednesday, NASCAR announced that the appeal was partially successful. While one of the infractions was upheld, the other was overturned—resulting in the points penalty being cut in half, from 60 to 30 points.
What This Means for Buescher’s Playoff Chances
This decision is a massive boost for Buescher. The updated standings now place him just six points shy of the playoff cut line, significantly improving his outlook as the regular season heads into its final stretch. Last season, Buescher narrowly missed out on the playoffs after making his debut in the postseason in 2023. With this reduction in penalty, he now has a fighting chance to make a return.
Appeal Panel Cites Vague Rulebook
The appeals panel issued a detailed explanation of their decision. According to their statement, NASCAR was able to prove that the reinforcement of the front bumper cover was against regulations. However, the panel found that the trimming of the exhaust panel cover lacked clarity in the rulebook.
In their words:
> “The panel concluded that NASCAR met its burden of proof regarding the reinforcement of the front bumper cover but did not meet it regarding the trimming of the exhaust panel cover. The rule book regarding the exhaust panel trimming lacked specificity on the amount trimmed or not trimmed. Accordingly, the panel reduced the owner and driver points penalty from 60 to 30 points.”
This explanation suggests that while RFK Racing did breach one rule, the lack of clear guidance in the NASCAR Rule Book led to the other penalty being dismissed.
RFK Racing Responds: “Pleased with the Outcome”
RFK Racing released a statement following the decision, expressing satisfaction with the outcome and emphasizing their commitment to following the rules moving forward.
> “We appreciate the opportunity to present our case to the National Motorsports Appeals Panel today and are pleased that the panel overturned one of the two assessed penalties. Our goal is to always comply fully with the letter of the NASCAR Rule Book, and our focus is now looking forward to competing for a win in Nashville this weekend.”
