Coventry City ..-.. Everton: Torp Caps Off Dominant Pre-Season Victory
Both teams showed positive signs, looking dangerous on the counter-attack, particularly Robins’ side. Coventry appeared sharp, with Ashley Young making a crucial intervention to prevent a through ball to Mason-Clark. The home team made it difficult for Everton to maintain possession, with the Sky Blues looking more eager.
Simms struck first after 25 minutes against his former club, finishing from point-blank range after an inviting ball by Milan van Ewijk was headed back into the danger zone by Bobby Thomas. It was a deserved lead for Coventry, although a poorly conceded goal from Everton’s perspective.
At times, it was hard to tell which team was from the Premier League, as Coventry’s fluent and swift attacks outplayed the visitors. Everton had few significant chances in the first half, with only minor opportunities for their forwards. Calvert-Lewin’s best chance came from a poor back pass, but his effort was easily claimed by Oliver Dovin.
Both teams made one change at the break, with Abdoulaye Doucoure replacing Ndiaye for Everton. Everton began to string passes together in the final third in the second half, but Coventry’s organized defense handled the threat easily.
Half of the stadium thought Coventry had scored their second when Sakamoto’s header hit the side netting. Soon after, Coventry did double their lead with a delightful move. Sakamoto’s deep cross was met by Mason-Clark, who headed past João Virgínia to score his first Coventry goal.
Sakamoto continued to look lively, curling a shot just wide after a well-executed move. Substitute Beto had a rare chance for Everton, but his strike flew over the bar. Everton appeared lethargic, creating little.
Coventry’s dominance continued as Torp found space in the box and finished brilliantly to make it three. Coventry’s relentless pressure was too much for Everton.
Coventry fans left happy, while Everton supporters may have concerns. With the Premier League season three weeks away, Sean Dyche’s side will look to address these issues.
