Dallas Cowboys Welcome Draft Target for a 30-Day Visit Jackson Powers-Johnson: Should You Pick or Trade Back?
With the uncertainty surrounding centre Tyler Biadasz’s future with the Dallas Cowboys, Oregon centre Jackson Powers-Johnson has frequently been mentioned as a potential replacement. However, a lacklustre free agency period has left the Dallas roster in flux. Priority seems to be on replacing left tackle Tyron Smith, with no moves yet made to address the departure of receiver Michael Gallup or the loss of two edge rushers to the Washington Commanders. Each need is emphasized by the looming possibility of having to replace quarterback Dak Prescott next season.
As a result, the Cowboys have several options available to them with the 24th overall pick in the draft, ranging from selecting another first-round lineman to acquiring a dynamic threat on the perimeter. While the consensus leans towards selecting the top remaining tackle, Powers-Johnson remains a viable option.
Notably, Dallas has already conducted a visit with Powers-Johnson, as have the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, Carolina Panthers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to reports. However, it’s important to recognise that much of the hype surrounding the Oregon product has originated from sources outside of established analysts with insider knowledge. While some draft experts have given him first-round grades based on his impressive performance last season, there’s a chance he could slide to the second round.
Critics of Powers-Johnson point to concerns such as poor knee bends affecting his power and a lack of athletic testing data that could have addressed some doubts. Additionally, questions arise about his pass protection skills, given Oregon’s quick-release offence, which may have limited his exposure in that area.
Despite these criticisms, Powers-Johnson was the highest-graded centre by Pro Football Focus last season, allowing just one pressure. Although he only started for one year, his performance was highly promising, earning him the Rimington Trophy as the best centre in the country.
While Powers-Johnson’s flaws are acknowledged, the Cowboys may prioritise him if they decide to trade him back from the 24th pick. As a potential Day 1 starter and one of the top players in his position, he warrants serious consideration. Despite concerns, he could offer immediate impact to a Cowboys offensive line in need of reinforcement.
