As the transfer window draws to a close, Brendan Rodgers has yet to bolster Celtic’s defence. Although the Hoops have already signed three new players—midfielder Paulo Bernardo and goalkeepers Viljami Sanisalo and Kasper Schmeichel—no defensive reinforcements have been added, despite Rodgers’ focus on securing quality signings.

Celtic had the strongest defence in the Scottish Premiership last season, which may explain why this area hasn’t been Rodgers’ top priority. However, with the possibility of departures, defensive signings are expected before the transfer window closes on August 30.

One potential target is Burnley’s Dara O’Shea, who joined from West Brom for £7 million last summer. Celtic would need to match or exceed this amount to bring the 25-year-old Irish international to the club. Brentford, a Premier League side, is also interested in O’Shea, making competition for his signature fierce.

Celtic is also eyeing Liverpool’s Owen Beck, who impressed during his loan spell at Dundee last season. The 21-year-old left-back earned praise for his performances, but Liverpool is reportedly seeking a permanent deal rather than another loan. Celtic may need to sell players to fund this transfer.

Meanwhile, speculation about Cameron Carter-Vickers has subsided after he committed to Celtic until 2029. Despite interest from Turkish clubs, it appears unlikely that the defender will leave. Stephen Welsh is also expected to stay, despite interest from Belgian club KV Mechelen, as Rodgers values his role in the squad.

However, Rodgers is looking to trim the squad by offloading players who are not central to his plans, which could create the necessary funds for further signings.
