DETROIT LIONS HAS HIRED A NEW COACH AS SEASON GOES HOT FOR THE…..
Ten inquiries for Twentyyman: In the NFL Draft’s first round, could the Lions trade up?
From time to time this offseason, Tim Twentyman will respond to 10 insightful questions from his Twitter account @ttwentyman in a segment titled “10 Questions with Twentyman.”
How do you assess the short-term success of a draft for a team like the Lions, which already boasts a strong roster, few glaring holes, and consistently drafts at the bottom of each round?
— Walter DeBoer (@deboerwa) April 4, 2024
20man: In my view, evaluating the draft spans a three-year window. Player development varies widely in this league. Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, and Brian Branch, for instance, immediately showcased their talent last year. Their promising performances hint at a bright future.
I urge against premature judgments on players. Derrick Barnes and Ifeatu Melifonwu are prime examples. While they took more time to develop, they flourished in their third season. Their breakout performances were crucial for the Lions.
With the Lions’ strongest roster yet under Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell, acquiring players who can compete for starting positions or contribute to the rotation would be a win. However, true player evaluation requires three years in my opinion.
What attributes are the Lions seeking in a cornerback? Are they leaning towards press man or off-the-ball zone coverage?
— Jason Kroulik (@crowlick) April 4, 2024
20man: Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn employs a versatile scheme that incorporates both man and zone coverages. During a recent discussion, Campbell mentioned prioritizing players capable of excelling in man coverage, such as Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson.
What positions might the Lions target that fans might not immediately consider?
— Route Runner Report (@RouteRunnerRPT) April 4, 2024
20man: It’s an intriguing question. Don’t be surprised if Holmes aims to strengthen the safety position, whether through free agency or the draft.
“We’re still seeking safety help,” Campbell stated recently. “We recognize the need to add competition to that group.”
While Melifonwu and Kerby Joseph seem set to start, enhancing depth and competition remains a priority.
Given the current strength of the offensive line, particularly with Decker and Frank dealing with injuries, and aging guards, should the Lions prioritize bolstering the line?
— redzone365 (@redzone365) April 4, 2024
20man: Holmes emphasized the importance of not overlooking the offensive line post-season. His actions in free agency, including signing Kevin Zeitler and retaining Graham Glasgow, reflected this commitment. I believe this sentiment extends beyond free agency.
Holmes will likely seek to fortify the line’s depth through the draft, especially considering the talent available at tackle and along the interior. Players like Jackson Powers-Johnson or Graham Barton could be compelling options at pick 29, providing competition, depth, and a long-term strategy, particularly at center.
Under what circumstances would the Lions consider trading up in the first round?
— Armenian Shrimp (@USXLDCOM) April 4, 2024
20man: Holmes has demonstrated a willingness to trade up for a top-ranked player if the price is reasonable and the player significantly outgrades others. If a run on offensive players occurs and elite edge rushers drop, Holmes might be compelled to secure an immediate impact player to complement Aidan Hutchinson.
Given the depth in defensive talent in this year’s draft, do you anticipate the Lions selecting offense with the 29th pick?
— Erik Baney (@BaneyErik) April 4, 2024
20man: The Lions will prioritize selecting the best player available when they’re on the clock. While it may seem mundane, Holmes firmly believes in this approach.
“The draft is where we pick the best player,” Holmes emphasized recently. “Free agency is where we address specific needs.”
The top of this year’s draft is expected to be offense-heavy with quarterbacks and wide receivers. This could push talented defensive players down the board, offering the Lions more options. It’ll be intriguing to see how it unfolds, but Holmes will undoubtedly trust his process and draft board.
What are your expectations for James Houston this season if he remains healthy?
— Funk Doc (@VBDarga) April 4, 2024
20man: Holmes recently highlighted Houston’s potential impact this season. Returning healthy for his third year after missing much of his second season due to injury, Houston appears motivated to make a significant contribution.
Houston possesses exceptional speed and agility off the edge, and I anticipate he’ll be driven to succeed. Whether he evolves into a three-down player or remains a specialized rusher will determine his impact. His development across all facets of his game this offseason will be critical.
How do you think the Josh Reynolds situation influences the upcoming draft? Is Donovan Peoples-Jones expected to be the primary replacement? Perhaps Antoine Green?
— delirious thoughts (@sarcasmtoafault) April 4, 2024
20man: With this year’s draft featuring one of the deepest and most talented wide receiver pools in recent memory, the Lions are likely to target a receiver with one of their early picks.
Josh Reynolds, though perhaps underrated, provided a reliable option for Jared Goff. While Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams occupy the top spots, Kalif Raymond’s consistent performance and Donovan Peoples-Jones’ return, alongside Antoine Green’s development in his second year, provide additional options.
