Simon Jordan, who acknowledged that Crystal Palace had stronger offers elsewhere before to his sale to the Toffees, makes this claim.

Bill Kenwright joined Everton as chairman in 2004 and served the team for over twenty years before he passed away last month.

After paying his respects to Kenwright, Jordan, the previous owner of Crystal Palace, remarked on his “kindness” and “warmth.” The TalkSPORT analyst also said that because of his affection for the former Toffees chairman, he let Everton underpay for Andy Johnson.

Johnson joined Goodison Park for £8.6 million in 2006 after being selected for Crystal Palace’s Congressional XI.

The Merseyside team offered £7.25 million to the Eagles, but they turned it down at first. Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers then made two offers totaling £8.5 million.

But in the end, Everton increased their bid and acquired him for a club transfer record. The attacker finished with 22 goals in 74 Toffees outings.

Following Everton’s victory over other teams to land Johnson, Simon Jordan has recently disclosed that Bill Kenwright was largely responsible for their success.
