Everton defeated Burnley 3-0 to go to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.

Vincent Kompany believes that Burnley still has a lot of catching up to do in relation to Everton and their “strong squad” following a convincing Carabao Cup defeat at Goodison Park.

With their 3-0 win yesterday night, the Blues advanced to the competition’s quarterfinals. Former Claret James Tarkowski headed in the first goal, then in the second half, Ashley Young and Amadou Onana both found the net. Burnely had little danger to score goals of their own, as their lone attempt on goal came far into stoppage time.

The Turf Moor team is having a challenging first season back in the Premier League thus far. They have only managed four points from their first ten games, leaving them in a precarious second place. Everton has now won five of their last seven games despite having struggled with top-flight relegation for the previous two years.

While pointing out that Everton has invested significantly more in their team over the past few years than Burnley, Kompany had to apologise for using the term “financial records” in light of an independent commission’s investigation into the Toffees’ alleged violations of Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

“Do you want to go through the financial records over the last few years? Oh, by the way, I’m not talking about those,” the Burnley manager asked. As I was saying it, I realized it was an entirely harmless error.

“The years and years and years of investment in the squad is what I meant to say.” The players on Everton’s team are excellent, and I don’t say this to be dejected.

“It doesn’t make sense to compare us to anyone in this league right now. We must keep our attention on ourselves and our progress toward the next level, not be distracted by Everton’s talented team. Any Premier League squad will do; they all have strong squads.

“We kept it a game, for the most part,” Kompany remarked about the game. We played well in the first half, but errors cost us, especially at this level. You’re in the Premier League, I keep repeating, so getting promoted shouldn’t be simple. Reaching that point still requires work; the first year is never simple. That is a component of what we are going through right now.
