Everton Women light the way with another shock.
Megan Finnigan’s goal gave Everton Women another victory away from Anfield against their neighbors Liverpool, continuing their impressive record there.
The skipper opened the scoring in the women’s Merseyside derby, much like last year, but this time it was the lone strike.
In front of 23,088 spectators, the Blues experienced an early setback when Lucy Hope was forced to leave the game due to an ankle injury. The Reds then scored shortly after, but Missy Bo Kearns’ goal was disallowed for offside.
However, just over the halfway point, Finnigan rose to head in Katrine Veje’s corner after Rachael Laws deflected Nicoline Sorensen’s attempt.
For the last hour of play, Brian Sorensen’s team was able to mostly contain Liverpool, limiting the home club to just three shots on goal and earning their first victory of the year.
Of course, the men’s team will be hoping that the women’s success will be a sign and foreshadowing for this coming Saturday when Sean Dyche’s team crosses Stanley Park for the noon Premier League kick-off.
