Ex-PL referee renders decision on contentious call during Everton’s victory over Palace

Like most teams in the division, Everton will frequently believe that the officials are working against them in their efforts to advance.

When the other team scores a penalty, supporters will point to a different incident when they believe they should have scored as well. Many will forensically examine the video and go through the rule book looking for inconsistencies if VAR upgrades a yellow card to a red card.

Even though officiating is undoubtedly at its lowest position in recent memory and the uncertainty that VAR has introduced further damaged the opinion surrounding them in the Premier League, on the weekend everything seemed to go flawlessly.

In order to keep the game moving smoothly, they quickly verified that Jarrad Branthwaite had, in fact, fouled Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze for their opening goal. They then refrained from making most other calls.

There was one point of controversy, though, when the two players engaged in another brawl within the box. He threw himself over an outstretched leg and waited for the whistle once the latter slid past the center-back.

When it did, Sam Barrott scheduled Eze for simulation, which was not the result the magician had planned for.

Despite applauding the referee and saying, “I won’t knock the referee because I think he’s one of the best up-and-coming referees in the Premier League and in his few games, I think he’s done really well,” Dermot Gallagher has now attempted to challenge the ruling in an interview with Sky Sports.
