In the high-octane world of motorsports, where speed, precision, and strategy are paramount, the relationship between racing drivers often extends beyond the track.
For Billy Monger, a racing driver turned commentator, this connection has been both personal and transformative. In a recent interview on the Daily Mirror’s Invite Only podcast, Monger opened up about his enduring friendship with Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton, and the invaluable lessons he has gleaned from the seven-time world champion.
A Friendship Forged in AdversityBilly Monger’s journey in motorsports is nothing short of extraordinary.
At just 17, Monger’s life took a dramatic turn when he was involved in a horrific crash during a Formula 4 race at Donington Park in 2017, resulting in the amputation of both his legs.
Despite this life-altering event, Monger’s indomitable spirit led him to return to competitive racing, becoming the first double amputee to race competitively in a single-seater car in 2019.It was during this period of recovery and adaptation that Monger’s path crossed with Lewis Hamilton, one of his childhood idols.
After Monger’s accident, Hamilton dedicated his fifth Grand Prix win to him, marking the beginning of a friendship that would inspire Monger in his racing career and beyond.
Learning from the BestIn his candid discussion on the Invite Only podcast, Monger reflected on his relationship with Hamilton, emphasizing how the Formula 1 superstar has been a source of motivation and guidance.
“Yeah, we still keep in touch. He was my idol growing up,” Monger shared with a smile. “So just to spend time so close to people like that, yeah, is hugely inspiring for me.
He is the best of all time.”One of the most intriguing revelations from the interview was Monger’s insight into the meticulous preparation that has contributed to Hamilton’s unparalleled success in Formula 1.
“He has given me a few tips around how he prepares. I can’t give away his secrets now, can I?” Monger teased. However, he did offer a glimpse into Hamilton’s approach, which underscores the importance of attention to detail. “He writes a lot of notes after every single time he drives.
He makes sure he writes [what happened] down diligently after every session.”Hamilton’s dedication to documenting his experiences on the track has evidently played a crucial role in his ability to maintain consistency and adapt to different conditions.
“So, if he turns up at a track five years later and it’s similar conditions, he’s got the notes ready there to reflect on. They’re the details that make you a champion,” Monger explained.
New Ventures and Unwavering ConfidenceWhile Monger continues to make his mark in the world of motorsports, his career has also expanded into broadcasting. As a regular on Channel 4’s Formula 1 coverage, Monger has become a familiar face to fans of the sport.
This year, he is set to embark on a new challenge, co-hosting a breakfast show every day during the Paralympics with Vick Hope.Despite having never presented together before, Monger is confident that their partnership will be a success.
“We’ve had a few little chats about what we’re gonna be doing together, and we just want to have fun with it,” Monger said.
“I think that’s the main thing – trying to explain to people at home how great the events are, how amazing the athletes are, and to give them a bit of insight.”Monger’s enthusiasm for the upcoming Paralympics is palpable, and he expressed his excitement about working with Hope, a seasoned broadcaster.
“When the idea of working with Vick was put to me, even though we hadn’t done a screen test or anything like that, it just made sense in my head,” he said. “I thought: ‘This is just going to work’.
So I just can’t wait to work with her – she’s done incredible things in her career up to this point.”Looking AheadAs Monger prepares for this new venture, he also expressed his hopes for a special guest to make an appearance – Vick Hope’s husband, renowned DJ Calvin Harris.
“I’d be pretty thrilled,” Monger said, adding that it would be a unique opportunity for Harris to experience the Paralympics firsthand. “Hopefully he shows his face, because it’d be cool.
And then he can see what the Paralympics is all about firsthand too.”Billy Monger’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of mentorship.
His friendship with Lewis Hamilton has not only provided him with insights into the mindset of a champion but has also reinforced his own drive to succeed, both on and off the track.
As he continues to break barriers and inspire others, Monger’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that with the right support and mindset, no obstacle is insurmountable.
