F1 at Christmas: 2024 stars recast as classic holiday movie characters

Christmas is the season of indulgence, relaxation, and festive entertainment.

While streaming issues might nudge you towards classic Christmas movies, why not add a twist? Here, we reimagine F1’s biggest personalities as beloved Christmas characters.

Here’s our list of festive F1 counterparts:

Fernando Alonso – The Ghost of Christmas Past

Hoping for a third world title, Alonso’s championship-winning days seem to belong to a bygone era.

With tensions reigniting on track with Lewis Hamilton, the Aston Martin driver is a perfect fit for the Ghost of Christmas Past, forever haunted by rivalries of yore.

George Russell – George Bailey

The comparison isn’t just about sharing the name.

Russell embodies the principled righteousness of George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life.

As head of the GPDA, Russell stands as F1’s modern James Stewart, championing fairness for drivers, albeit in a sport far removed from the “common man.”

Yuki Tsunoda – Kevin McCallister

Abandoned and known for occasional temper flares, Yuki Tsunoda shares much in common with Kevin McCallister from Home Alone.

After being cast aside by Red Bull’s Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, Tsunoda mirrors Kevin’s plight.

However, unlike Kevin’s joyous reunion, a Red Bull comeback for Yuki seems unlikely.

Max Verstappen – The Grinch

Despite being a four-time champion, Verstappen has displayed a grouchy side, from heated radio rants in Hungary to downbeat press conferences about Red Bull’s 2024 form.

Yet, like the Grinch, he embraced the festive spirit in Las Vegas, seen smiling with a gin and tonic in hand.

McLaren – The Wet Bandits

If Red Bull is the McCallister family, then McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are Harry and Marv, the Wet Bandits.

The pair’s stellar 2024 performance “stole” the constructors’ crown from Red Bull, much like the robbers tried (and failed) to loot Kevin’s house.

Valtteri Bottas – The Snowman

Bottas evokes the melancholy magic of Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman.

The Finnish driver, ever dependable, seems destined to melt away after Christmas as he exits the F1 stage in 2025.

The snowy setting of his native Finland only reinforces this bittersweet parallel.

Eddie Jordan – Billy Mack

Eddie Jordan, much like Billy Mack from Love Actually, is a charming, outspoken older figure who says what he thinks with zero hesitation.

If F1 ever created a Jordan biopic, Bill Nighy would be the ideal actor to play him.

Bernie Ecclestone – Ebenezer Scrooge

The quintessential Scrooge of F1, Bernie Ecclestone’s wealth and gruff demeanor make him a perfect fit for the role.

Imagining him in Victorian garb overseeing the F1 paddock is almost too easy.

Leo Leclerc – Gizmo

Adopted by Charles Leclerc and Alexandra Saint Mleux, the adorable Leo Leclerc stole hearts in 2024.

Like Gizmo from Gremlins, Leo is undeniably lovable, earning his place as a festive F1 highlight.

Roscoe Hamilton – Stripe

If Leo Leclerc is Gizmo, then Roscoe Hamilton, Lewis Hamilton’s mischievous dog, embodies Stripe, the chaotic Gremlin leader.

With a knack for creating mischief and commanding attention, Roscoe could easily lead a Gremlin-style party takeover.

From Alonso’s haunted past to Verstappen’s Grinch-like moments, F1 personalities bring festive archetypes to life in a truly unique way this Christmas.
