F1 Monaco Grand Prix: Red Bull star pits after opening lap crash

Monaco Grand Prix commenced with dramatic scenes as Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez was involved in a significant crash on the opening lap, leading to a red flag and an extended race delay.

Opening Lap Chaos

As the race began, Pérez found himself in a tight battle with Haas driver Kevin Magnussen while ascending the hill from Sainte Devote. Magnussen attempted an inside pass, resulting in contact that sent Pérez’s car into the barriers. The collision caused Pérez’s RB20 to spin across the track, collecting the second Haas of Nico Hülkenberg in the process. All three drivers were forced to retire from the race immediately.

Despite the severity of the crash, all drivers emerged unscathed. However, a trackside photographer sustained minor injuries from flying debris and was treated at the medical center.

Diverging Perspectives

Post-incident, Pérez criticized Magnussen’s maneuver, labeling it as “dangerous driving” and expressing surprise that the FIA did not initiate an investigation. Magnussen defended his actions, asserting there was sufficient space for the move and that Pérez did not provide adequate room.

Race Resumption and Outcome

Following a 40-minute delay to clear debris and repair barriers, the race resumed. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc maintained his lead from pole position, ultimately securing his first victory at his home Grand Prix. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz completed the podium in second and third places, respectively.

The crash had significant financial implications for Red Bull, with damage to Pérez’s car estimated between £2.5 million and £3 million.

This incident underscores the inherent risks of racing on Monaco’s narrow streets and highlights the critical importance of safety measures in Formula 1.
