F1 NEWS: Adrian Newey FINALLY Reveals Design ERROR That S…read more

Formula 1’s legendary designer Adrian Newey has revealed that one of his earliest experiences with car design involved a major mistake one that ultimately fueled his passion for motorsport engineering.

Widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest minds, Newey has played a pivotal role in securing 13 world championships for Red Bull across his two spells with the team. However, before making his mark in F1, he was just a young boy struggling to assemble a model car kit correctly.

A Mistake That Sparked a Passion

In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, Newey reflected on the origins of his love for racing and design.

“I often get asked why I became so passionate about motorsport, and honestly, I still don’t have a clear answer,” he admitted. “When I was six or seven, I had Scalextric and would ride in my father’s Lotus Elan and Mini Cooper S. But my ninth birthday stands out as a key moment.”

On that birthday, Newey received a 1967 Honda V12 model kit, but his first attempt at assembling it didn’t go smoothly.

“When I put the car on the ground, it looked like a dragster because the rear end was lifted way too high. I later realized I had installed the rear right wheel incorrectly upside down! I was just too young to properly understand what I was doing,” he said.

A year later, he received a Lotus 49 model, which left a lasting impact and strengthened his passion for car design.

Newey’s Next Chapter with Aston Martin

Newey recently shocked the F1 world by announcing his departure from Red Bull after 19 years. In a surprise move, he has since joined Aston Martin ahead of the 2025 season, where he aims to elevate the team into championship contenders.

Aston Martin has struggled at the start of the 2025 campaign, with Fernando Alonso retiring from both the Australian and  Chinese Grand Prix, while Lance Stroll has only managed to score 10 points.

As Newey gears up for the 2026 regulation changes, he will be hoping that his interpretation of the new rules is far more precise than his early model-building efforts!
