FIA Names Malcolm Wilson as Nominee for Deputy President for Sport Amid Leadership Shake-Up

The FIA has officially revealed that Malcolm Wilson OBE is President Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s chosen candidate to fill the role of Deputy President for Sport, following the sudden resignation of Robert Reid earlier this month.

In a public announcement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the motorsport governing body stated:

“The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA)… has today announced that FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has nominated Malcolm Wilson OBE for the position of Deputy President for Sport.”

Wilson is a highly respected figure in British motorsport and currently serves as Managing Director of M-Sport Ltd, the organization behind Ford’s World Rally Championship efforts since 1997. With a career spanning over four decades in rallying as both a driver and technical expert Wilson brings deep industry experience to the role.

Ben Sulayem praised Wilson’s extensive background, saying:

“Malcolm’s remarkable track record in global motorsport both behind the wheel and as a key technical collaborator will provide tremendous value to the FIA and its member clubs as we continue developing the sport.”

Wilson expressed excitement about the nomination, noting his long-standing relationship with the FIA:

“The FIA has been integral to my motorsport journey. I’m eager to support the president and the broader FIA family in promoting motorsport to new audiences and delivering top-tier championships worldwide.”*

FIA members are set to vote on Wilson’s appointment during the extraordinary general assemblies in Macau this June.

This nomination comes at a turbulent time for the FIA. Reid’s resignation and subsequent criticisms of the organization’s internal culture have stirred controversy. His remarks were echoed by former FIA CEO Natalie Robyn, who also cited structural challenges as reasons for her departure last May.

Wilson’s nomination may signal the FIA’s intent to restore stability and credibility amid ongoing leadership turbulence.
