FIA Removes Lap Times for Max Verstappen and Lando Norris Over…read more.

In a tense moment during the 2025 Formula 1 season, the FIA annulled lap times for Max Verstappen and Lando Norris due to breaches of track limits, fueling debate over the fairness and consistency of race regulations.

At the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying, Lando Norris initially claimed pole position with an impressive lap. However, the FIA’s automated system detected a possible track limits violation on his previous lap, leading officials to delete his fastest time. After reviewing the incident, the stewards determined Norris had not gained an advantage—he had actually gone off and lost time—so his pole-setting lap was restored.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen faced multiple lap deletions during Austrian Grand Prix qualifying, with a total of 47 laps across drivers nullified for similar track limits violations. Verstappen voiced his frustration, criticizing the strict system and saying it made drivers appear “like amateurs.” He called for more leniency and better judgment in marginal cases.

These controversies have sparked broader conversations within the F1 world about how track limits are enforced. While the FIA insists that tight rules maintain fairness, many drivers and teams are pushing for clearer rules and more consistent decisions to uphold the sport’s competitive spirit.

As the championship moves forward, the FIA will be under growing scrutiny to find a balance between enforcing the rules and allowing the natural flow of racing to continue.
