Sebastian Vettel has admitted that Lewis Hamilton’s dominance during his time at Mercedes was the key factor that prevented Ferrari from winning a championship during Vettel’s years with the iconic Italian team. The four-time world champion, who joined Ferrari in 2015 after winning four consecutive titles with Red Bull, had high hopes of bringing Ferrari back to championship glory. However, despite several strong seasons, Vettel was unable to add to his tally of world titles, largely due to Hamilton’s brilliance on the track.
In a recent interview, Vettel reflected on Ferrari’s struggles and praised Hamilton’s consistency and skill. “We came close a couple of times, but Lewis made the difference,” Vettel said. “Even when we had a competitive car, he and Mercedes always found a way to stay ahead.”
Vettel’s most promising championship campaigns came in 2017 and 2018 when Ferrari briefly challenged Mercedes’ dominance. However, a combination of team errors, driver mistakes, and Hamilton’s ability to capitalize on crucial moments ultimately tipped the scales in Mercedes’ favor.
Hamilton’s dominance during that period saw him secure multiple championships, extending his tally to seven world titles. Meanwhile, Vettel’s frustrations at Ferrari grew, and after failing to recapture his championship-winning form, he left the team in 2020.
Although Vettel has since retired from Formula 1, his comments highlight the influence Hamilton had on shaping the competitive landscape during one of Ferrari’s most challenging eras.
