F1 News Today: Red Bull Star Handed Major FIA Penalty as Disqualification Statement Issued at Canadian GP

Red Bull Racing’s Yuki Tsunoda has been hit with a significant penalty by the FIA following an incident during the final practice session (FP3) at the Canadian Grand Prix, sparking fresh controversy just hours before the race.

The Japanese driver was adjudged to have overtaken McLaren’s Oscar Piastri under red-flag conditions — a direct breach of the FIA’s sporting regulations. Despite Tsunoda’s explanation that he swerved to avoid debris after Piastri’s crash at Turn 14, the FIA stewards ruled that he violated Appendix H, Article 2.5.4.1(b) of the International Sporting Code.

Penalty Breakdown:

10-place grid drop for Sunday’s race.

penalty points added to his FIA Super Licence.

The decision demotes Tsunoda from his qualifying position of P11 to the back of the grid — a major blow to his hopes of scoring points at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

FIA Statement:

> “The driver of Car 22 [Tsunoda] overtook another car while the session was under red flag conditions. The justification offered by the team was insufficient under the current rules. Safety is paramount, and all drivers are expected to exercise absolute caution during red flags.”

Verstappen on the Brink

Meanwhile, Red Bull’s lead driver Max Verstappen enters Sunday’s race under immense pressure. The reigning world champion currently has 11 penalty points on his Super Licence — just one point shy of an automatic race ban. With two points set to expire at the end of June, Verstappen must avoid any further infractions at the Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix.

Speaking to the media, Verstappen lashed out at repeated questions on the matter:

> “It’s really pissing me off. It’s very childish. I’m not changing how I race.”

Grid Impact:

Tsunoda’s penalty further shakes up the grid. Mercedes’ George Russell starts on pole, with Verstappen alongside him in P2. The drama surrounding both Red Bull drivers adds another layer of tension to what’s expected to be an action-packed race.

What’s Next?

Tsunoda will attempt a recovery drive from the back of the grid.

Verstappen must complete the race incident-free to avoid a ban that could dramatically impact the championship standings.

With FIA regulations under the spotlight once again and Red Bull’s drivers walking a tightrope, the Canadian Grand Prix promises drama both on and off the track.
