Toto Wolff’s Reaction to Hamilton’s First Ferrari Photos
A New Chapter for Hamilton
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has shared his thoughts on seeing Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari colors for the first time, describing the moment as “iconic.” Hamilton, who spent 12 years with Mercedes and became the most successful driver in Formula 1 history with the Silver Arrows, officially stepped into his new role at Ferrari last week. The British driver made headlines worldwide as he was photographed at Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters, wearing the team’s legendary red overalls and preparing to drive one of their cars for the first time.
Wolff’s Emotional Reaction
Reflecting on the moment, Wolff admitted that seeing Hamilton in Ferrari red was an emotional experience. Comparing it to a personal relationship, he said:
“It’s a little bit like you divorce amicably, and it’s all good, and then you see your partner for the first time with a new friend!”
Despite the initial impact, Wolff emphasized that he was happy for Hamilton and appreciated how well his Ferrari debut was presented. He told Sky Sports News that the photoshoot was beautifully curated, which was expected given Hamilton’s attention to detail.
Mercedes’ Plans for the Post-Hamilton Era
With Hamilton’s departure, Mercedes is now entering a new phase, turning their focus toward a younger lineup. The team has promoted 18-year-old rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli to partner George Russell for the 2025 season. Antonelli, who recently passed his driving test, is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in motorsport.
Wolff expressed confidence in Antonelli’s readiness, stating:
“He’s been in the team, integrated for such a long time. We’ve known him since he was 11, and in that respect, he’s been prepared, he’s ready to go, and he can’t wait.”
What Can Mercedes Achieve in 2025?
Following a mixed 2024 season where Mercedes won four races but finished only fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, the team is aiming for a stronger and more consistent performance in 2025. They are set to unveil their new W16 car on February 24, with a shakedown scheduled for the following day in Bahrain. Pre-season testing will then begin at the same circuit on February 26.
Wolff acknowledged the challenges Mercedes faced in 2024, admitting that they struggled at times to understand their car’s performance. Reflecting on the W15, he said:
“We were scratching our head a lot last year, particularly in the beginning. Like all the other teams, we had ups and downs; we had some very dominant performances and then other races that were not so good.”
Despite these challenges, Wolff remains optimistic. He pointed out that the true test will come when the new season begins, saying:
“At the end of the day, when the flag drops, we’re going to see in qualifying in Melbourne where we stand.”
Looking Ahead
As Mercedes transitions into a new era without Hamilton, all eyes will be on their young talent Antonelli and how well the team adapts to the challenges ahead. Meanwhile, Hamilton’s journey with Ferrari is just beginning, setting the stage for one of the most exciting seasons in recent Formula 1 history.
