F1 NEWS: Williams Shocks F1 World with Signing of Ex-Alpine…read more
In a move that has caught the paddock by surprise, Williams Racing has secured the services of former Alpine academy star Victor Martins for its Formula 1 junior program.
The 24-year-old Frenchman, who was unexpectedly dropped by Alpine at the end of last season despite being a race winner in Formula 2, will now continue his push toward F1 under Williams’ wing. The reigning Formula 3 champion brings championship pedigree to the Grove-based squad’s development stable.
From Alpine Outcast to Williams Prospect
Martins’ departure from Alpine after six years raised eyebrows in the F1 community, particularly after his strong 2024 F2 campaign that included multiple podium finishes. Williams has moved quickly to capitalize on the French manufacturer’s surprising decision to cut ties with one of its most promising juniors.
“I’m thrilled to begin this new journey with Williams,” Martins said. “While the colors may have changed, my ambition hasn’t – I’m here to prove I belong in Formula 1. Williams’ incredible heritage and clear vision for nurturing young talent makes this the perfect environment for me to grow.”
Fast-Tracked to F1 Machinery
In a clear show of commitment, Williams will immediately put Martins behind the wheel of its 2023 FW45 during a private Monza test this weekend. He’ll share driving duties with fellow Williams junior Luke Browning, giving the team a chance to evaluate both rising stars in F1 machinery.
Williams Sporting Director Sven Smeets emphasized the significance of the signing: “Victor brings exactly what we look for – race-winning experience, technical maturity, and that extra spark that separates good drivers from champions. His addition strengthens our long-term vision for the team.”
The signing continues Williams’ aggressive restructuring of its junior program following the recent acquisitions of F2’s Luke Browning and karting sensation Oleksandr Bondarev. With Martins now in the fold, the historic British squad appears serious about developing homegrown talent rather than relying on pay drivers.
As the F2 season progresses, all eyes will be on whether this fresh start can propel Martins toward his ultimate goal – a coveted seat on the F1 grid.
