Max Verstappen’s Camp Confirm Ferrari Talks Amid Ongoing Future Speculation

The Formula 1 paddock has been awash with speculation throughout the 2025 season regarding the long-term future of reigning four-time world champion Max Verstappen. Although the Dutchman has publicly confirmed that he will remain with Red Bull Racing for the 2026 campaign, new revelations suggest that discussions have taken place with rival teams — including Ferrari.

For much of this season, Verstappen’s next move has been a subject of intrigue. While the driver himself has repeatedly assured fans of his loyalty to Red Bull, behind the scenes his representatives have reportedly been engaged in exploratory conversations with other leading teams. Earlier this year, Mercedes team officials revealed that preliminary talks had been held with Verstappen’s camp, sparking headlines about the possibility of him replacing Lewis Hamilton or George Russell in the future. Now, according to his father Jos Verstappen, Ferrari also entered the frame.

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Viaplay, Jos Verstappen confirmed that Ferrari was one of the teams they had been in contact with during 2025. While he dismissed some of the wild rumours that tend to circulate in the paddock, he admitted that there had been a higher number of serious discussions this year compared to the past. “It is not that we have talked about it a lot just this year. This year, however, a little more than in previous years,” he explained. “So it was true, but there is also a lot of nonsense that goes along with the rumours. But we are also talking about Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull. It is logical. Max and I are discussing the possible options, and it is the three big teams, apart from McLaren, that can welcome him.”

The suggestion that Verstappen could consider Ferrari adds a fascinating twist to the ongoing driver market saga. Ferrari currently appear settled with their driver pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who are both under contract to race for the Scuderia in 2026. However, the long-term outlook is far from certain. Much could hinge on Ferrari’s competitiveness under the sweeping regulation changes due in 2026.

Hamilton, in particular, is seen as the key variable in whether Verstappen could eventually make the switch to Ferrari. The seven-time world champion has been open about his determination to fight for wins with Ferrari, but if the Italian outfit proves uncompetitive under the new rules, many insiders believe he could call time on his illustrious career. That potential exit would open up one of the most coveted seats in Formula 1, potentially paving the way for Verstappen.

For now, Verstappen remains tied to Red Bull through the 2026 season. His relationship with new team principal Laurent Mekies has been a focus of the team’s rebuilding efforts, as they look to re-establish themselves as the sport’s dominant force. The champion has insisted that his immediate priority is helping Red Bull adapt successfully to the upcoming changes and regain the upper hand over rivals. Still, his father’s comments suggest that Verstappen is keeping his options open, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding the post-2026 competitive landscape.

The situation underscores a broader truth about Formula 1’s driver market: the future is often dictated by performance. Verstappen’s decision beyond 2026 is expected to hinge not on loyalty, but on which team produces the fastest and most reliable car under the new regulations. Whether that is Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, or another surprise contender, only time will tell.

For Ferrari, the rumours of Verstappen talks highlight their status as a long-term contender for the Dutchman’s services, even if no changes are imminent. While both Hamilton and Leclerc are secure for now, the Scuderia will undoubtedly keep a close eye on how the sport evolves over the next two seasons.

What is clear is that Verstappen’s name will remain at the centre of speculation until his next contract decision is made. With his unmatched talent and proven record of success, any shift in his allegiance would have enormous implications for the balance of power in Formula 1. For the moment, the Red Bull star has one foot firmly planted in Milton Keynes — but the door to Maranello, and Ferrari red, has not been closed entirely.
