A powerful statement from Lewis Hamilton has been issued following the announcement of shocking plans for his Formula 1 return. The seven-time world champion is set to make his debut with Ferrari in 2025, marking a significant shift in his career after officially departing from Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season. Hamilton will aim for a historic eighth world title with the Italian team, adding another remarkable chapter to his already legendary career.
Regardless of whether Hamilton manages to secure that elusive eighth championship, his legacy in Formula 1 is undeniable. Over the years, he has broken numerous records, establishing himself as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. His extraordinary accomplishments on the track have earned him admiration from fans, fellow drivers, and motorsport enthusiasts around the world.
Off the track, Hamilton has made a significant impact as well, using his platform to advocate for diversity and inclusion within motorsport. Through his Mission 44 initiative, Hamilton has pushed for greater opportunities for underrepresented groups, making a strong case for a more inclusive and equal environment in the racing world. His commitment to social justice issues extends beyond the racetrack, as he has consistently spoken out on topics such as climate change and racial equality.
One of Hamilton’s most passionate campaigns has been his call for the return of Formula 1 to Africa. For years, he has advocated for the sport’s return to the continent, emphasizing its importance for the global growth of motorsport and for inspiring future generations of African drivers. In recent years, his efforts have gained momentum, and Rwanda has emerged as a potential candidate for hosting an F1 race.
Now, South Africa has announced plans to join the race for an African Grand Prix. Gayton McKenzie, the country’s Minister of Sports, delivered a powerful statement in support of their bid to bring Formula 1 back to South Africa. F1 last raced in the country in 1993, and the event had a history from 1962 until 1993, with a hiatus between 1986 and 1991 due to the political situation in South Africa during Apartheid.
McKenzie opened his speech by acknowledging Hamilton’s long-standing advocacy for the return of Formula 1 to Africa, stating, “We are here for two reasons: reason number one is to pay homage and to thank Lewis Hamilton.” He praised the British driver for his steadfast commitment to the cause, saying Hamilton had often stood alone in his efforts but had never wavered in his belief that the sport should return to Africa.
The Minister also noted that Hamilton’s advocacy for an African Grand Prix had gained widespread support, with other drivers, corporate entities, and fans now rallying behind the cause. McKenzie emphasized that South Africa’s bid for an F1 race is directly inspired by Hamilton’s resilience and determination to bring Formula 1 to Africa. “Our bid is inspired by the resilience of Lewis Hamilton,” he said, urging everyone present to acknowledge Hamilton’s efforts with a round of applause.
South Africa’s Formula 1 steering committee will play a pivotal role in shaping the bid to bring the sport back to the continent. The committee will be tasked with preparing a proposal for Formula One Management and the FIA, which will include selecting a suitable host city and designing a track that meets the necessary requirements for a Formula 1 race. This marks an exciting step toward the possibility of F1 returning to Africa after more than three decades, with the hopes of reinvigorating the sport’s presence on the continent and inspiring the next generation of drivers from Africa.
