The final free practice session at the Japanese Grand Prix was interrupted twice on Saturday morning, following a chaotic four-red-flag FP2 on Friday. The session nearly descended into chaos when a red flag was thrown in the first 10 minutes due to recurring grass fires, despite the FIA’s assurances that corrective measures had been taken overnight. However, after the initial fire was extinguished, the majority of the session ran under green flag conditions, with around 45 minutes of uninterrupted running. Unfortunately, a second fire brought the session to a halt with just six minutes remaining, preventing teams from carrying out practice starts for the second consecutive day.
As expected, McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri topped the timesheets, but George Russell put in a strong performance, closing in on them with his Mercedes just 0.112 seconds behind, setting the stage for an exciting qualifying session.
Yuki Tsunoda again made a strong case for his promotion to Red Bull, setting a faster time than both Racing Bulls, although Isack Hadjar’s time was just a thousandth of a second slower.
