Lando Norris Dominates Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to Secure McLaren’s Constructors’ …….read more
Lando Norris secured a stunning victory in the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, leading McLaren to its first Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship title in years. Norris’ performance was nothing short of brilliant, as he managed to dominate the race from start to finish. His triumph, combined with a solid performance by his teammate Oscar Piastri, sealed the title for McLaren with ease. Norris’ victory, worth 25 points, ensured that the papaya team was out of reach for their rivals, effectively securing the championship before the final round of the season.
The podium in Abu Dhabi was completed by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, who finished in second and third, respectively. Sainz finished just over five seconds behind Norris, while Leclerc trailed him by just under 32 seconds. Despite the fierce competition from Ferrari, McLaren’s dominance in the final race made them untouchable in the Constructors’ standings.
The race itself was filled with drama and chaos, starting right from the first corner. Max Verstappen, who had qualified well, made contact with Oscar Piastri on the opening lap, sending the McLaren driver into a spin. The collision earned Verstappen a 10-second penalty and sent Piastri to the back of the pack. However, Verstappen’s troubles didn’t end there. Later in the race, he was involved in a series of incidents that saw him finish in sixth place, almost 50 seconds behind the leader.
Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate, also had a difficult race. The Mexican was spun around on the opening lap by Valtteri Bottas, who was involved in a series of collisions throughout the race. Perez’s car sustained too much damage and he was forced to retire early, ending his race prematurely. Bottas, who also collided with Kevin Magnussen, saw his race come to an end after damaging his car in the chaos.
While the race was chaotic for many drivers, it was a shining moment for Lewis Hamilton. The British driver, who was racing in his final Grand Prix with Mercedes, put on an inspiring display of skill and determination. Starting from 16th on the grid, Hamilton fought his way through the field, consistently improving his position. In the last 12 laps, he hunted down his teammate George Russell, who was in fourth place. Hamilton slashed a 14-second gap, overtaking Russell for fourth on the very final lap of the race, much to the delight of his fans. His comeback drive was a fitting way to end his 12-year stint with Mercedes.
Russell, on the other hand, finished in fifth place, less than a second behind Hamilton. Despite a strong start, he was unable to hold off the relentless challenge from his teammate. Max Verstappen finished in sixth place, but his race was marred by the early penalty and his involvement in multiple incidents, ultimately costing him any chance of a podium finish.
The rest of the top ten was made up of Pierre Gasly, who finished seventh for Alpine, and Nico Hulkenberg in eighth place for Haas. Fernando Alonso, another veteran driver, finished in ninth place for Aston Martin, followed by Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri in tenth, who had recovered from his spin at the start to secure a respectable result.
The race was especially disappointing for those on the fringes of Formula 1, with drivers like Bottas, Magnussen, and Franco Colapinto ending their careers under difficult circumstances. Bottas was involved in a collision with Magnussen, forcing him to retire, while Colapinto’s Williams car suffered a technical failure, also ending his race prematurely.
As the season closed, McLaren’s triumph marked a historic achievement, securing the Constructors’ Championship after a long wait. Norris and Piastri had delivered a perfect season, with consistent performances, including Norris’ fantastic win in Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, Hamilton’s heroics provided a fitting send-off to his Mercedes career, and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was a race that will be remembered for its chaos, drama, and moments of individual brilliance.
