At the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, Max Verstappen’s absence from Thursday’s media sessions sparked speculation about possible FIA penalties. However, it was soon confirmed that Verstappen missed the event for personal reasons  he was with his partner, Kelly Piquet, for the birth of their daughter, Lily. Given the nature of his absence, the FIA is not expected to issue any penalties, and Verstappen has since rejoined his Red Bull team for the remainder of the weekend.

Meanwhile, Mercedes has been under the microscope after a pit-lane infringement during sprint qualifying. Lewis Hamilton’s mechanics were spotted working on the car without wearing the required helmets, which violates Article 34.13 of the sporting regulations. Despite this, the race stewards decided against penalizing Mercedes, noting that several other teams also engaged in similar practices. Instead, they recommended that the FIA review the rules to ensure clearer enforcement and consistent safety measures across all teams.

In parallel, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is considering updates to the FIA Sporting Code’s Appendix B following concerns raised by drivers. This review comes after recent criticism from drivers like George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who expressed frustration about the lack of communication regarding penalties for swearing and other misconduct, and about the limited influence of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) in these decisions.

As the Miami race weekend moves forward, both on-track battles and off-track regulatory discussions are shaping the headlines.
