The Baltimore Orioles, often referred to as the O’s, are a professional baseball team located in Baltimore, competing in Major League Baseball (MLB) as part of the American League (AL) East Division. Originating as one of the American League’s original eight teams in 1901, the franchise initially played in Milwaukee as the Milwaukee Brewers before relocating to St. Louis in 1902, where they became known as the St. Louis Browns. In 1953, the franchise was purchased by a group of Baltimore business and civic leaders, led by Clarence Miles and Mayor Thomas D’Alesandro Jr. The current owner is David Rubenstein. Their home stadium is Oriole Park at Camden Yards, opened in downtown Baltimore in 1992. The team’s name pays homage to Maryland’s official state bird, the oriole, a symbol used by previous baseball clubs in the city, including one that later became the New York Yankees.
The Orioles’ first World Series appearance was in 1944 as the Browns, losing to the St. Louis Cardinals. From 1966 to 1983, the Orioles appeared in six World Series, winning three titles in 1966, 1970, and 1983. This period showcased numerous Hall of Famers such as Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer, Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken Jr., and manager Earl Weaver. They have secured ten division championships (1969, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1979, 1983, 1997, 2014, 2023), seven pennants (1944 while in St. Louis, 1966, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1979, 1983), and three wild card berths (1996, 2012, 2016). The Orioles were the last original AL team to win a pennant and World Series.
Following a stretch of 14 losing seasons from 1998 to 2011, the Orioles experienced a resurgence under manager Buck Showalter and general manager Dan Duquette, making three postseason appearances, including a division title and a berth in the American League Championship Series in 2014, ending a 17-year drought. However, in 2018, they recorded 115 losses, the most in franchise history. Showalter and Duquette’s contracts were not renewed after the season. Brandon Hyde is the current manager, with Mike Elias serving as general manager and executive vice president. After finishing with a 52–110 record in 2021, the Orioles bounced back in 2023 with a remarkable 101–61 record, capturing the AL East title for the first time since 2014.
