Ferrari boss hints at F1 driver RETURN after Hamilton exit
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has revealed that discussions about a potential return for Carlos Sainz to Ferrari have already taken place, following confirmation of Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming exit from the sport.
Sainz, currently in his final season with Ferrari, is being replaced by seven-time world champion Hamilton in 2025.
The British driver will join Ferrari after a remarkable 12-year career with Mercedes.
As a result, Sainz, who could not secure a seat with one of the sport’s top teams, has signed a long-term contract with Williams after months of speculation.
At 30 years old, Sainz still has time for one more big move in his career if Williams cannot provide a car capable of competing for race victories in the coming seasons.
While Mercedes has chosen 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli to replace Hamilton, and Red Bull continues to favor younger talent, Sainz was left to explore other options.
Hamilton’s multi-year contract with Ferrari suggests the 39-year-old is nearing the end of his illustrious career, leaving Ferrari’s future driver line-up open to speculation.
Vasseur confirmed to DAZN that Ferrari remains open to a Sainz return down the line, acknowledging that the Formula 1 driver market is highly dynamic.
“In the future, the door is certainly open for him,” Vasseur stated, adding that talks have already occurred.
He highlighted the sport’s limited opportunities, with only 10 teams and a handful of elite drivers, meaning circumstances could change rapidly in the coming years.
Vasseur emphasized that both parties are currently focused on their respective projects, but acknowledged that anything is possible between 2027 and 2029.
For now, Sainz will look to lead Williams forward while remaining a potential option for Ferrari down the road.
