FIA summon Mercedes over pit-lane procedure
The FIA has summoned Mercedes ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix over a pit-lane procedure, marking a key development as the 2024 Formula 1 season nears its conclusion.
The race, held at the Lusail International Circuit, serves as the penultimate event of a captivating season.
Max Verstappen arrives in Qatar as a four-time world champion, having secured his latest title in Las Vegas during the previous race.
Meanwhile, McLaren and Ferrari continue their fierce battle for second place in the constructors’ championship, with just 24 points separating them heading into the season’s final two rounds.
Mercedes, fresh off a dominant one-two finish in Nevada, will be under scrutiny as the FIA enforces a pit-lane regulation.
George Russell secured his second victory of the year in Las Vegas, with teammate Lewis Hamilton delivering a remarkable drive from 10th on the grid to finish second.
Despite the strong showing, Mercedes is set to finish fourth in the constructors’ standings after a challenging season.
As part of the FIA’s standard pre-race procedures, Mercedes must position one of its cars in its pit-stop position for inspection.
Russell’s car, designated Car 63, has been selected for this process.
The inspection will take place between 15:00 and 16:00 local time on Friday, with one car from each team required to be displayed for media access.
This procedure allows photographers and reporters to capture detailed images of the cars before the weekend’s on-track action begins.
The FIA mandates that if a team brings new aerodynamic or bodywork components for the weekend, these must be featured on the displayed car.
In addition to Russell’s Mercedes, the FIA has also selected Pierre Gasly’s Alpine and Alex Albon’s Williams for presentation during the media session.
With Mercedes facing the inspection and preparations underway, all eyes are on the grid as the teams gear up for what promises to be an exciting Qatar Grand Prix.
