GM of the Packers Fires Back at the Lions
In 2023, the Detroit Lions experienced their best season ever.
In addition to winning their first-ever NFC North Division championship, they also came very near to winning a Super Bowl berth.
Although things haven’t always been simple for Dan Campbell’s club, it’s becoming increasingly clear that they’re on the right track and will be a strong contender for many years to come.
The Green Bay Packers, however, were unimpressed with their efforts.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst reportedly made a bold statement to the Lions during his media availability at the NFL Scouting Combine: the team will never fly division banners because they’re aiming for a greater prize. This was reported by Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.
“We don’t hang banners for division titles around here.” That’s not the point, according to Gutekunst.
In addition, he expressed confidence in his team’s potential to win a Super Bowl as soon as the next season.
That might not be all that implausible.
The Packers, who are the youngest club to qualify for the playoffs since the merger, had a great chance to defeat their division rivals in the NFC Championship Game and were just one field goal away from forcing the San Francisco 49ers into overtime.
Of course, they still need to bolster their squad with more quality, and the young players need to keep improving.
But with Jordan Love getting even better and a capable defensive coordinator in 2024, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Packers make another significant advancement. This squad appears to be ahead of schedule.
