Hamilton replacement ABSENT as rival F1 star in shock test
Lewis Hamilton’s replacement at Mercedes for the 2025 Formula 1 season has withdrawn from a surprise test event on short notice.
This development comes shortly after Hamilton’s emotional final race with the Brackley-based team, following his announcement of a move to Ferrari next season.
Hamilton ended his 12-year stint with Mercedes on a high note, delivering an impressive performance in his last race.
Despite starting 16th after a difficult qualifying session, he climbed through the field to finish fourth.
The moment was met with heartfelt celebrations in the Mercedes garage, marking the end of an era for the seven-time world champion.
Speculation about Hamilton’s successor had been rife since his pre-season announcement.
While Max Verstappen was initially rumored to be a contender, Mercedes ultimately chose rookie Kimi Antonelli to partner George Russell in 2025.
The Italian teenager faced challenges early on, including a crash during FP1 at Monza, but remains optimistic about his potential in Formula 1.
Antonelli was set to participate in the Japanese Super Formula Championship’s winter test at Suzuka Circuit, a valuable opportunity to gain experience ahead of his debut season.
However, he has withdrawn due to an illness that also sidelined him from the Formula 2 finale last weekend.
Meanwhile, fellow rookie Oliver Bearman will proceed with the test as planned.
Bearman, who will drive the Dallara SF23 at Suzuka on Friday, expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity.
He highlighted the importance of familiarizing himself with the iconic circuit, which will be part of his racing calendar next season.
In an official statement, Bearman said, “I’m really excited to be driving at Suzuka in the Super Formula car.
It’s one of the circuits which will be new to me next season, so getting the chance to experience it, and in such an amazing car, will be super helpful.”
Antonelli’s withdrawal is a minor setback as he gears up for his first season in Formula 1, but he remains focused on making an impact alongside Russell at Mercedes.
