WYMAN: After convincing victories in Dallas and Colorado, the Jets appear primed for a postseason run.
If there’s anything that could instill hope in Winnipeg Jets fans regarding their team’s potential for a deep playoff run, it’s the impressive performance showcased in their last two games.
To recap, the Jets travelled to Dallas on Thursday and secured a decisive 3-0 victory against the first-place Stars, demonstrating a remarkable defensive prowess against one of the NHL’s top teams and a clear favourite for the Stanley Cup.
Then, on Saturday, the Jets delivered a resounding 7-0 win against the Avalanche in Denver. This game not only served as a preview of a potential first-round playoff series but also could influence home-ice advantage in the upcoming playoffs.
In total, the Jets outscored their two closest rivals in the Central Division standings by a combined score of 10-0. Their performance was characterised by defensive structure, offensive firepower, exquisite goal-scoring, and efficiency on the power play.
Moreover, the shutout performances by Laurent Brossoit on Thursday and Connor Hellebuyck on Saturday further solidified the Jets’ status as formidable contenders in the Central Division and potential contenders for the Stanley Cup.
Jets head coach Rick Bowness praised the stellar goaltending performances and emphasised the team’s ability to play with the right structure and pressure, making them a formidable opponent.
Saturday’s game saw the Jets dominate offensively, with captain Adam Lowry and centre Sean Monahan each contributing two goals, supported by goals from Tyler Toffoli, Gabe Vilardi, and Josh Morrissey. The power play was particularly impressive, showcasing slick passing and effective finishing.
Looking ahead to the playoffs, adherence to defensive structure, outstanding goaltending, and contributions from secondary scorers will be essential for the Jets’ success. The team’s performance against the Avalanche, though impressive, was acknowledged to be below the Avalanche’s usual standard, indicating that tougher challenges lie ahead in the playoffs.
Despite the convincing win, the Jets remain aware that the Avalanche will likely present a much tougher challenge in the playoffs, as they anticipate a different level of competition.
With the upper hand in second place in the Central Division, the Jets now have the opportunity to secure home-ice advantage in the first round by winning one of their remaining two games against the Seattle Kraken or the Vancouver Canucks. If the Avalanche falter in their last two games, the Jets will secure second place as well.
