Raiders Bench Jimmy Garoppolo, Try To Move Forward Under Interim Coach Antonio Pierce

In Henderson, Nevada, the Las Vegas Raiders underwent further changes on Wednesday, leaving interim coach Antonio Pierce to navigate the developments and salvage the season.

Following the dismissals of coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi was released. Quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree was elevated to the position of offensive coordinator, and Aidan O’Connell replaced starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo.

Antonio Pierce, stepping into his role at 45, downplayed any personal significance of facing the New York Giants, focusing instead on the Raiders’ urgent need for a victory. Owner Mark Davis’ decision to enact dramatic changes was largely influenced by the team’s 3-5 record.

“This is a great opportunity for myself,” Pierce remarked. “I’m humbled, I’m honored, and I don’t take it lightly. We’re tired of losing. It’s not a good feeling for a production-based business.”

Pierce, accompanied by Champ Kelly, who assumed the role of interim GM, acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed eagerness to tackle them head-on.

“Although the circumstances are not ideal, there’s always opportunity in difficulties,” Kelly commented. “I’m so eager and excited to get to work.”

The Raiders’ most notable on-field alteration came at quarterback, with Aidan O’Connell taking over for Garoppolo, who struggled with injuries and turnovers.

Even before McDaniels’ departure, Garoppolo’s position might have been in jeopardy due to his performance in Monday night’s loss at Detroit, where he threw crucial interceptions and missed open receivers.
