The rumour that 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk had demanded a trade has intensified.

Amidst a stalemate in contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and standout wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, speculation about a potential trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers has been circulating.

These rumours gained significant traction on Sunday morning when self-proclaimed “NFL insider” John Frascella shared a report claiming that Aiyuk had formally requested a trade. Frascella also highlighted that “the Steelers have shown the most interest in pursuing a trade for Aiyuk, with the Ravens also indicating interest.”

While there have been several indicators fueling these rumours, such as Aiyuk recently unfollowing the 49ers on Instagram, fans are advised to approach this information with caution due to its dubious source. Notably, prominent NFL insiders like Adam Schefter of ESPN, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, or Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report have remained silent on the matter. Although Frascella has maintained an active presence since June 2009, his main affiliation appears to be as a fantasy football contributor for Razzball.com.

Another noteworthy development on the rumour mill front was a screenshot shared by Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright on Saturday evening, featuring an “eyes” emoji alongside a screenshot of a text message exchange from March 14, indicating that the Steelers were actively pursuing a trade for Aiyuk.

Allbright’s credibility as an insider carries more weight, although the context of the month-old text message exchange is somewhat lacking. At the annual league meetings in late March, 49ers GM John Lynch explicitly refuted the notion that Aiyuk was available for trade.

However, recent events have shown that NFL GMs’ statements during the offseason may not always be entirely reliable. Steelers GM Omar Khan, for instance, expressed “full faith” in Kenny Pickett before subsequently signing Russell Wilson in free agency and reportedly designating him as the starting quarterback right from the outset.
