In Super Bowl 58’s overtime thriller, the former defensive coordinator for the Giants wins his fourth ring.
Former Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo adds another championship ring to his collection while Patrick Mahomes works his magic. After a 19-year absence, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25–22 in overtime to become the first club to win back-to-back Super Bowl titles since the New England Patriots in 2004 and 2005.
In addition, it was the second Super Bowl to be decided in overtime. Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker broke the previous record with a 57-yard field goal, which came after 49ers kicker Jake Moody had set the record earlier in the game with a 55-yarder that broke the scoreless deadlock. With six seconds remaining in overtime, quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 34 of 46 throws for 333 yards and two touchdowns, including the 2-yard game-winning ball to receiver Mecole Hardman, which gave the Chiefs a 455-to-382 yard advantage over the 49ers. Two Chiefs mistakes earlier in the game—a fumble and an interception—that resulted in the 49ers’ subsequent touchdown drives ending in punts were not capitalized upon by the 49ers, who led the Chiefs 10-3 at the half.
In overtime, the 49ers won the toss and, with the score tied 19-19 at the end of regulation, quarterback Brock Purdy—who finished the game 23 of 38 for 255 yards and one touchdown—engineered a 13-play opening drive that went 66 yards and resulted in a 27-yard field goal by Moody to give the 49ers a 22-19 lead.
Nevertheless, Mahomes, the MVP of the game, responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that included a touchdown pass to HArdman, who was by himself in the end zone corner.
