Is it time for the 49ers to bring OL Laken Tomlinson back?

For the San Francisco 49ers, offensive line is the most important position, particularly on the right side. Right tackle and right guard both need a serious upgrading.

There is a need to replace Spencer Burford and Colton McKivitz because they are not the solution. An old acquaintance of Burford’s could be one possible guard replacement. Following his release by the New York Jets, Laken Tomlinson is currently a free agent. From 2018 to 2021, Tomlinson played for the 49ers for four seasons.

Not at all. I understand why, considering the 49ers’ need at offensive line, the initial instinct would be to find Tomlinson’s availability enticing. However, the Jets released Tomlinson for a reason. He is no longer a skilled player. Yes, his release allowed the Jets to save $8.1 million. However, organisations won’t let rid of a talented player in order to save money the salary cap.

Tomlinson never reached his best after switching teams and joining the Jets from the 49ers. According to Pro Football Focus, Tomlinson gave up seven sacks and 51 pressures, which is the second-most of any guard last season. Additionally, PFF gave him career low scores in pass blocking and run blocking. Tomlinson is someone the 49ers should avoid at all costs. They no longer think of him as the same kind of player they once did.

In addition, he is a left guard who has little experience on the right side. There is no reason to bring him back. Don’t try to force potential that doesn’t exist and put Tomlinson in the past.
