Juan Pablo Montoya Criticizes Alpine’s Decision to Drop Jack Doohan for Franco Colapinto
Former F1 star Juan Pablo Montoya has called out Alpine for what he sees as an unfair and abrupt decision to replace Jack Doohan with Franco Colapinto, arguing that the Australian deserved more time to prove himself.
Doohan was removed from Alpine’s driver lineup after just six races in the 2025 season, during which he failed to score points and endured two crashes. The team confirmed Colapinto as his replacement beginning with the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Speaking to AS, Montoya shared details of a conversation with Mick Doohan, Jack’s father, during the Miami Grand Prix weekend.
“I spoke with him, and he said, ‘You in the media are trying to push my son out.’ But I actually believe drivers should be given a fair shot.”
Montoya expressed confusion over Alpine’s apparent short-term approach to driver contracts, questioning the logic behind what appears to be a five-race agreement.
“If the team says, ‘He’s our driver for the season,’ then stick with it. If Jack’s contract was only for five races, that in itself makes no sense.”
Rumors of a limited race window for Doohan had circulated since the start of the year, and speculation has grown around Flavio Briatore’s alleged support for Colapinto playing a role in the switch.
Colapinto is now set to drive for Alpine over the next five races, with his future beyond that point to be reviewed ahead of the British Grand Prix. His appointment adds further intrigue to a season already marked by shifting team strategies and intense competition for grid spots.
