Fernando Alonso Shares Valuable Lessons Learned from Adrian Newey at Aston Martin

Formula 1 veteran Fernando Alonso has opened up about the experience of working alongside legendary engineer Adrian Newey at Aston Martin, revealing how much he has already learned from the design mastermind.

Newey, widely regarded as the greatest engineer in F1 history, joined Aston Martin earlier this year after a dominant spell with Red Bull. His arrival has brought fresh energy and ambition to the team, particularly as they prepare for the major regulation changes coming in 2026.

Although Alonso has been realistic about the team’s 2025 prospects, often tempering expectations, he has never doubted that brighter days are ahead — especially with Newey now on board.

“Adrian is a very special person,” Alonso told Mundo Deportivo. “He’s a genius unlike anyone I’ve ever worked with. His creativity is extraordinary. He sees a racing car in a completely different way and can design every aspect of it.”

The two-time world champion praised Newey’s all-encompassing approach to design and innovation, describing him as a constant source of inspiration.

“Whether it’s aerodynamics, the car’s structure, suspension, or even something outside F1 — if you left him in Monaco for a minute, he’d design a boat and float it,” Alonso said. “Design is his life. The way he thinks and speaks is completely unique. Every time he talks, it’s a lesson.”

Despite the optimism for the future, Aston Martin’s 2025 campaign has been difficult. Alonso’s prediction that the year would bring challenges has proven true, with the Spaniard failing to score a single point in the opening eight races. His DNF in last weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix added to a frustrating run, leaving him among just four drivers yet to get off the mark this season.

However, with the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona coming up, Alonso is hopeful that a return to his home track might help turn things around — and begin to show glimpses of the progress being made behind the scenes with Newey.
