“Russell Anticipates Exciting 2025 Partnership with Rising Star Antonelli at Mercedes”
George Russell is preparing for a fresh challenge in 2025 with his new Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli. The young Italian will be replacing Lewis Hamilton, who is making a surprising switch to Ferrari. Russell expressed his excitement about partnering with Antonelli, acknowledging that the 18-year-old’s arrival at Mercedes will “keep him on his toes.”
Antonelli, who has quickly progressed through the ranks of motorsport, will step up to Formula 1 after bypassing F3 and starting his first Formula 2 season this year. The announcement of his promotion came during the Italian Grand Prix weekend, just a day after his FP1 debut at Monza, which ended prematurely due to a crash 10 minutes into the session. Despite the early setback, Russell believes Antonelli has the raw speed needed to compete at the highest level of motorsport.
Discussing Antonelli’s potential, Russell noted that the teenager is bound to make some mistakes as he adjusts to Formula 1, but emphasized that speed is the key quality Antonelli possesses. “I think you either have the speed or you don’t, and Kimi absolutely has the speed. He’s shown that in every category he’s raced in,” Russell said.
Russell went on to explain that while experience plays a significant role in a driver’s development, it doesn’t necessarily make them faster. He remarked, “I don’t believe I’m any faster on raw pace now than I was at 17. Experience teaches you how to handle a race weekend, the tyres, and the team, but the speed is something you either have or you don’t.”
He also acknowledged that Antonelli, like any young driver, will make mistakes early in his Formula 1 career, especially as he races at the front of the field. However, Russell is confident that Antonelli’s exceptional pace will make him a formidable teammate.
Reflecting on his time alongside Lewis Hamilton, Russell described the three years working with the seven-time world champion as a valuable experience but welcomed the new challenge that Antonelli brings. “I’m really looking forward to what Kimi and I can achieve together from next year,” he added.
Antonelli, who has been part of the Mercedes junior program and is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in motorsport, will spend the rest of 2024 preparing for his full-time Formula 1 debut. In addition to completing his F2 season, Antonelli is expected to participate in another FP1 session in Mexico and continue private testing with Mercedes.
As Mercedes moves into a new era with Russell and Antonelli leading the charge, the team’s focus will be on maintaining its competitiveness at the front of the grid. Antonelli’s arrival marks a significant shift following Hamilton’s departure, but both Russell and Mercedes are optimistic about the partnership’s potential.
With Antonelli’s impressive speed and Russell’s growing experience as a race-winning driver, Mercedes fans will be eager to see how the pair performs together when the 2025 season kicks off. In the meantime, Antonelli will continue honing his skills, ensuring he’s ready for the challenge of stepping into a full-time Formula 1 seat next year.
As Formula 1 looks toward the future, Antonelli’s progression will be closely watched, and his partnership with Russell could signal a new chapter of success for Mercedes in the coming seasons.
